Having teeth extracted can be a daunting experience. This leads to feelings of insecurity and self-consciousness. Never fear – we have treatment options here!
1. Dental implants. This is a small screw that is placed in the jawbone to serve as an artificial tooth root. This procedure is usually done under local anaesthetic. An implant can be used to replace one or more missing teeth. The screw itself is very compatible with the human body and bone bonds well to it, giving it a stable and long-term structure on to which a replacement tooth is fixed. This replacement tooth is called a crown and is designed to withstand the day-to-day life a normal tooth would withhold.
2. Partial dentures. This is mainly used where one or more teeth are missing but some natural teeth remain. Dentures are removable appliances that go over the gum and replace the lost teeth. They provide a better aesthetic option than simply leaving a gap.
3. Bridge. This is a more traditional form of treatment for tooth replacement. A bridge will span the gap between the missing tooth and the two adjacent teeth. Conventional bridges require the adjacent otherwise healthy teeth to be filed down to accommodate crowns and a false crown. This increases the risk for damage to the healthy teeth and can sometimes inhibit the prognosis should further treatment be needed in the future.
If the gap is left after your extraction and you do not undergo treatment, not only might this make eating certain foods more difficult, but the remaining teeth often move into the space left and can become misaligned. This can, in turn, lead to potentially further treatment being needed.
